A Brief History Of Marketing
A Brief History Of Marketing Here and there advertising is as old as human advancement itself. You may have seen films situated in old Greece or Rome with pictures of dynamic market slows down and brokers definitely occupied with persuading correspondences. Obviously these merchants would not have called their exercises advertising and their exercises may appear to be far expelled from somebody requesting aircraft tickets through a site. The idea of advertising that we presently observe has more to do with development during the modern insurgency of the eighteenth and nineteenth hundreds of years. This was a time of quick social change inspired by mechanical and logical development (BBC history). One outcome was that just because the creation of products was isolated from their utilization. Large scale manufacturing, creating transport foundation and developing broad communications implied that makers expected to, and could grow increasingly refined methods of dealing with the circulation of products. The creation direction time For a great part of the modern insurgency merchandise were commonly constrained and makers could sell basically all that they could create, insofar as individuals could bear to get them. Their attention was hence on creation and appropriation at the most minimal conceivable expense and whatever advertising the board that there was viewed as these issues (for instance, decreasing circulation costs, opening new markets). The business direction time From the begining of the twentieth century to the time following the Second World War (in spite of the fact that the advancement was hindered by the wars) rivalry expanded and the focal point of showcasing went to selling. Interchanges, publicizing and marking began to turn out to be progressively significant as companies expected to sell the mounting yields of creation in an inexorably amassing market. Showcasing was accordingly still a captive to creation, however centered around appropriation, correspondence and convincing clients that one producer merchandise were superior to another. The promoting direction time From the 1960s onwards most markets have gotten overflowed (the size of the market continues as before). This implies there is presently extreme rivalry for clients. The refinement of promoting the board has in this manner advanced into what we currently find in a cutting edge showcasing division. Advertisers are included at a key level inside the association and thusly educate an association about what ought to be delivered, where it ought to be sold, what amount ought to be charged for it and how it ought to be imparted to buyers. Current advertisers research markets and buyers. They attempt to comprehend customer needs (and possible needs) and designate authoritative assets appropriately to address these issues. Present day advertisers are for the most part keen on brands. They are additionally progressively worried to guarantee that workers get promoting, for example that everybody inside the association includes themselves with showcasing exercises. Development of promoting It is difficult for some to think, however when contrasted with financial aspects, creation and activities, bookkeeping and different business zones, showcasing is a reasonably youthful control having risen in the mid 1900s. Before this time most issues that are currently for the most part connected with promoting were either accepted to fall inside fundamental ideas of financial matters (e.g., value setting was seen as a straightforward gracefully/request issue), publicizing (very much created by 1900), or by and large, just not yet investigated (e.g., client buy conduct, significance of conveyance accomplices). Driven by showcasing researchers from a few significant colleges, the advancement of promoting was in enormous part irritated by the need to analyze in more prominent detail connections and practices that existed among merchants and purchasers. Specifically, the investigation of showcasing drove venders to perceive that embracing certain methodologies and strategies could widely profit the merchant/purchaser relationship. In the past times of showcasing (before the 1950s) this regularly implied recognizing methodologies and strategies for just selling more items and administrations with little respect for what clients truly needed. Regularly this implied organizations held onto a sell-as-much-as possible way of thinking with little worry for building connections as long as possible. However, beginning during the 1950s, organizations prompted to see that old methods of selling were wearing ragged with clients. As rivalry became inflexible across most businesses, associations looked to the purchaser side of the exchange for approaches to advance. What they discovered was a rising way of thinking meaning that the key factor in effective showcasing is understanding the requirements of clients. This now celebrated Marketing Concept recommends advertising choices should spill out of at first knowing the client and what they need. At exactly that point should an association begin the way toward creating and advertising items and administrations. Three Eras of Marketing In the primary time of advertising, we were given eye getting magnificence in the encompassing foundation, which gave us a specific quieting impact; exactly what the promoting ploy required. At that point you saw the bright wide assortment of grouped natural products that were accessible. You could walk interminably about, taking as much time as is needed to choose what you needed. There were no pushy sales reps, certainly no TV advertisements, and without a doubt no bothering calls. Truth be told, it didnt take considerably more than a murmur of a recommendation to make the primary promoting ploy work. It was straightforward, simply tell the individuals they couldnt have the one thing that would permit them to know and have all that they at any point needed. What started as a little promoting ploy, snowballed from the beginning of time, and I accept started the absolute first advertising period. The second period of promoting was anything but difficult to see coming. At the point when the majority not, at this point searched out all that the market brought to the table, it turned out to be evident that another showcasing period was inevitable. Presently was the ideal opportunity for the market to go to the purchaser. A totally different scope of procedures rose in the midst of declining deals. First there was the one on one, entryway to-entryway advertising approach. While viable, it was a moderate informal procedure. It didn't offer a fast reaction like the new productive banners, or papers and magazine advertisements that followed. Indeed, even today, these showcasing approaches proceed, yet when TV and radio began selling publicizing time, the promoting approach had again changed. Presently sponsors could claim not exclusively to what the shopper required and needed, yet to what they may need some time or another later on. These roads offered access to new promoting zones and thoughts. This second promoting period enabled individuals to advertise things like houses, lodging activities, and get-away retreats. Purchasers no longer needed to spend overabundance cash on gas just to perceive what was accessible. Likewise, school reserves, entombment courses of action and even retirement plans, were effectively taken care of in the solace o f your own home. At last, we go to the third and last advertising time. Presently, due to satellite and Internet capacities, mass promoting is consistently accessible; climate you need it or not. It resonates in your ears from TV, radio, boards and so forth. It is the principal thing you find toward the beginning of the day and the exact opposite thing you hear around evening time, before you turn of you TV. In this current third advertising period, each vain creative mind of man is showcased. It isn't just showcased to the individuals who have the cash, however to the individuals who have no cash. They even direct their notices under age kids who have no cash. The advertising methodologies are so unreasonable now, they really empowered the under age and the low pay grouping of individuals, to lie and start purchasing things on layaway. Promoting is a type of correspondence expected to convince a group of people (watchers, perusers or audience members) to buy or make some move upon items, thoughts, or administrations. It incorporates the name of an item or administration and how that item or administration could profit the customer, to convince an objective market to buy or to devour that specific brand. These messages are normally paid for by supports and seen by means of different media. Publicizing can likewise serve to convey a plan to countless individuals trying to persuade them to make a specific move. Business promoters regularly try to create expanded utilization of their items or administrations through marking, which includes the reiteration of a picture or item name with an end goal to connect related characteristics with the brand in the brains of buyers. Non-business promoters who go through cash to publicize things other than a customer item or administration incorporate ideological groups, premium gatherings, strict associations and legislative organizations. Charitable associations may depend on free methods of influence, for example, an open help declaration. Current promoting created with the ascent of large scale manufacturing in the late nineteenth and mid twentieth hundreds of years. Broad communications can be characterized as any media intended to arrive at a mass measure of individuals. Various kinds of media can be utilized to convey these messages, including customary media, for example, papers, magazines, TV, radio, open air or post office based mail; or new media, for example, sites and instant messages. Electronic Media Advertising A TV promotion or TV plug regularly simply business or TV promotion (US), or advert, business, ad or essentially just advertisement (UK/US), or promotion film (India)- is a range of TV programming created and paid for by an association that passes on a message. Ad income gives a huge segment of the subsidizing for most exclusive TV stations. Most by far of TV ads today comprise of brief promoting spots, going long from a couple of moments to a few minutes (just as program-length infomercials). Ads of this sort have been utilized to advance a wide assortment of merchandise, administrations and thoughts since the beginning of TV. The USAs first TV commercial was communicated J

Avoiding the Passive Voice in Spanish
Maintaining a strategic distance from the Passive Voice in Spanish One of the most widely recognized missteps made by starting Spanish understudies who have English as a first language is to abuse aloof action word structures. Sentences with inactive action words are extremely regular in English, however in Spanish they arent utilized particularly in ordinary discourse. Key Takeaways: Spanish Passive Voice Albeit Spanish has an aloof voice, it isnt utilized as much in Spanish for what it's worth in English. One option in contrast to the latent voice is to transform it into the dynamic voice. Either expressly express the subject or utilize an action word that permits the subject to be inferred as opposed to stated.Another regular option is to utilize reflexive action words. What Is the Passive Voice? The detached voice includes a sentence development where the entertainer of the activity isnt expressed, and in which the activity is demonstrated by a type of to be (ser in Spanish) trailed by a past participle, and in which the subject of the sentence is the one followed up on. On the off chance that that isnt clear, take a gander at a basic model in English: Katrina was captured. For this situation, it isnt indicated who played out the capture, and the individual captured is the subject of the sentence. A similar sentence could be communicated in Spanish utilizing the inactive voice: Katrina fue arrestada. Yet, not every single English sentence utilizing the aloof voice can be converted into Spanish a similar way. Take, for instance, Jose was sent a bundle. Placing that sentence in an aloof structure in Spanish doesnt work. Josã © fue enviado un paquete just doesnt bode well in Spanish; the audience may think from the start that Jose was sent some place. Additionally, Spanish has many action words that essentially arent utilized in the uninvolved structure. What's more, still others arent utilized inactively in discourse, despite the fact that you may see them in journalistic composition or in things interpreted from English. At the end of the day, in the event that you need to decipher an English sentence utilizing an aloof action word to Spanish, youre generally best off thinking of an alternate way. Options in contrast to the Passive Voice How, at that point, should such sentences be communicated in Spanish? There are two regular ways: reevaluating the sentence in the dynamic voice and utilizing a reflexive action word. Reworking in the aloof voice: Probably the least demanding approach to decipher most uninvolved sentences in Spanish is to transform them to the dynamic voice. At the end of the day, make the subject of the inactive sentence the object of an action word. One explanation behind utilizing a latent voice is to abstain from saying who is playing out the activity. Luckily, in Spanish, action words can remain solitary without a subject, so you dont essentially need to make sense of who is playing out the activity to change the sentence. A few models: Inactive English: Roberto was arrested.Active Spanish: Arrestaron a Roberto. (They captured Roberto.)Passive English: The book was purchased by Ken.Active Spanish: Ken comprã ³ el libro. (Ken purchased the book.)Passive English: The movies was shut down at 9.Active Spanish: Cerrã ³ la taquilla a las nueve. Or then again, cerraron la taquilla a las nueve. (He/she shut the movies at 9, or they shut the movies at 9.) Utilizing reflexive verbs:à The second basic manner by which you can maintain a strategic distance from the latent voice in Spanish is to utilize a reflexive action word. A reflexive action word is one in which the action word follows up regarding the matter. A model in English: I saw myself in the mirror. (Me vi en el espejo.) In Spanish, where the setting doesnt demonstrate something else, such sentences are regularly comprehended similarly as are inactive sentences in English. What's more, similar to detached structures, such sentences dont plainly show who is doing the activity. A few models: Latent English: Apples (are) sold here.Reflexive Spanish:à Aquà se venden las manzanas. (Truly, apples sell themselves here.)Passive English: The movies was shut down at 9.Reflexive Spanish: Se cerrã ³ la taquilla a las nueve. (Truly, the movies shut itself at 9.)Passive English: A hack isnt treated with antibiotics.Reflexive Spanish: La tos no se trata con antibiã ³ticos. (Truly, the hack doesnt treat itself with anti-infection agents.) A portion of the example sentences in this exercise could be justifiably meant Spanish in the latent structure. Be that as it may, local Spanish speakers dont typically talk that way, so the interpretations on this page would normally solid progressively common. Clearly, you wouldnt utilize the exacting interpretations above in making an interpretation of such Spanish sentences to English! In any case, such sentence developments are exceptionally basic in Spanish, so you shouldnt avoid utilizing them.

A week told through food
A week told through food Some of you may wonder: how do people eat food without a meal plan? Well, dear mortals, I have perfected the art of photosynthesis and subsist entirely through sunlight. Unfortunately, with the encroaching winter, rapidly decaying window of daylight, and my delayed sleep schedule, I need to supplement my diet with human food. So I took a picture of all the food I ate for a week, because I thought that would be a cool blog post, and here it is. This came out as an experiment to figure out how exactly I got my meals. I knew I was eating roughly lunch and dinner and other meals every day, but I didnât know how much of what I was eating was free, how much I cooked, and how much I bought. I thought making this post would help. As a disclaimer, this also isnt representative of people who arenât on meal plans. One of my friends cooks spectacular dishes for most of his lunches and dinners, for example. Come to think of it, almost all of my friends are on meal plans, so I donât really know exactly how people without meal plans get their food. Finally, you can shame me for having horrible eating habits. Itâs cool. Iâll accept it. I hate my eating habits too. Sunday I wake up late, as HMMT01 the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament, a high school math competition happened the day before and I spent a long night around Harvard and hanging out with friends. Breakfast was not a concern. Our hall has a free food table which had some leftover corn flakes, and I didnât want cereal, so I made some breadsticks rolled around in crushed corn flakes. I eat that for lunch with some Nutella. I also eat two bananas. I do some work for the rest of the day; I didnât have much to do. For dinner, I eat some apple crumble and pie thatâs also left in our free food table. Monday I again wake up late enough that breakfast was not a concern. I eat some croissants from the Dunkin in the Stud02 the woefully inadequate Student Center for lunch. Outside the Stud, I watch the transit of Mercury. Or at least, attempt to watchâ"there were too many clouds to have a long enough viewing window to appreciate it. I spend the rest of the afternoon working in the Stud before heading to Kresge for an improv workshop with Roadkill Buffet, MITâs improv comedy group. For dinner, we had a DEAPS03 Discover Earth and Planetary Sciences, the Freshman Pre-Orientation Program I went to. We basically learned about earth sciencey stuff for a week together. It was really fun, strongly recommend. reunion at Naco Taco, a Mexican place up along Mass Ave. I think I had the Al Pastor taco, and another taco that I donât remember the name of, but it probably had beef and cheese. We also had lots of chips. I also have tea, and wonder whether or not to take a picture of it. Tuesday I sleep through breakfast. The Office of the First Year hosts around two or three lunches with professors every week, and I usually sign up for one each week. This week I had lunch with Professor Steil from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. His historyâs pretty cool, since he went from African-American Studies as an undergrad to a PhD in Urban Planning. We had some conversations about the first-year experience and Course 1104 Urban Law and Planning. . The lunch itself is Cafe Luna catering. Itâs nothing spectacular, but at this point, Iâve been conditioned to like it. It always comes in these white boxes, with a sandwich, some chips, and a pastry, usually a cookie. I grab a steak and cheese sandwich. After that, I print some documents and study for a bit before taking the second midterm for 8.02205 Physics 2. . I didnât feel that confident leaving the midterm. I donât remember what I did next, but I probably did homework or something before heading to Pritchett. EZHealth organized a cooking class at Pritchett. We were taught to make Kale and Quinoa Salad and Chicken and Mexican Rice Bowl. The recipes were pretty simple to follow, so it quickly turned to a QA session about cooking. We sampled the dishes too. Then I head to Tech Squares,06 MITâs square dancing club! where there are some snacks to munch on in between the dancing. Most of it was gone by the time I remember to take a picture. There were some really good blueberry scones. Back at my hall, we have a small event where we drank tea and munched on pretzels. I stay up a bit late and get hungry, so I eat some Wheat Thins. I belatedly realize that I didnât really eat dinner that night. Oops. Wednesday For breakfast, I have a protein bar. I had a lot of these in stock from when I did a Costco run a couple weeks back. I eat it during lecture for one of my classes. After lecture, one of my friends invites me to eat with him in the Maseeh dining hall, saying he had lots of meal swipes he needed to use. So we eat. I forget to take a picture until my plate is nearly empty, but I had some broccoli, and probably some rice, and maybe some sort of meat. I donât really remember. I do remember I had milk. After recitation and another lecture, I head to the International Students Office. The ISO has an afternoon break every second Wednesday, and thereâs food and some activities. This monthâs afternoon break was themed around Thanksgiving, and we played charades with words related to fall. I have some salad, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. I head to the Stud to do some homework again. For dinner, ESP07 the Educational Studies Program, best known for running Splash. had a worksession, where we did some work to prepare for Splash. Splash is an event where over two thousand high school students come to MITâs campus to take classes, mostly taught by MIT students, about literally anythingâ"from astronomy to ancient art to abstract algebra. Most of what I did in the worksession was helping revise a bunch of emails. Thereâs also food that I couldnât identify (probably Mediterranean?), but I remember it being good. After the worksession, I head back to hall and hang out. Around midnight, I eat some fries that my friend had leftover from the takeout box they took from the Maseeh dining hall. Thursday I again do not have enough time to cook breakfast before my recitation, so I eat another protein bar. For lunch, I donât have too much time to cook, so I instead make a power smoothie before heading to lecture. It is essentially fruit, protein powder, milk, and vegetables. I down it with some bread. It is probably the healthiest single thing Iâve consumed all week, if youâre only counting raw nutrients.08 which is probably not the best way to determine whether something is healthy For dinner, I make myself some scrambled eggs and toast. I probably tossed in some other things in the eggs too, but I donât remember what, nor can I tell from the picture. Also not pictured is the toast. I then head to first aid training for ESP, where we learned things like how to provide first aid to wounds. Then I headed to a vacant classroom in Building 56 to practice teaching one of my Splash classes called Relating Games. Around midnight, I get hungry and eat a little Chex Mix I had bought from the Stud. I ended up eating a quarter of the bag. Friday I skip breakfast. To be honest, my sleep schedule has shifted enough that lunch is pretty much my first meal of the day. After lecture, I head to the International Students Office again, because there was a talk on impostor syndrome with some pizza. I could only finish one of the slices, and I packed the other one in a container I bring around with me to scavenge for food. Immediately after that I head back to my room to pack my things before heading to the train station at Kendall. For the weekend, a bunch of HMMT members were going to Princeton to volunteer for PUMAC09 a math competition that Princeton undergrads run , and we left that afternoon. After a tortuous and torturous seven-hour bus ride to New York, we briefly eat dinner at a Chick-fil-A. I have mixed feelings about eating dinner from a franchise whose values I vehemently disagree with. We take a train to Princeton Junction and then the dinky to Princeton. I fall asleep on a couch. Saturday Busy day, as it was PUMAC. I woke up at around 8 AM and ate a bagel that they provided as breakfast for the volunteers. I did not remember to take pictures of the bagel because I was preoccupied with figuring out how to proctor. I proctored a team while doing a pset. Watching them solve math problems reminded me of when I used to do math competitions, two years ago.10 i feel so old PUMAC got Subway to cater for everyoneâs lunch. Apparently Subway does catering, and it came in boxes with a sandwich, chips, and a cookie. If that sounds familiar, well, it should. Because of the unsatisfying lunch, several of my friends and I went to a Panera Bread11 there are no Panera Breads in Cambridge. Oof. to have some more food. I was already rather full, so I order a small mac and cheese. After that, I headed back to the classrooms to help grade PUMACâs Live Round. After some intermissions and awarding ceremonies, a couple of volunteers from HMMT head to eat dinner at PJâs Pancake House. I get pancakes, eggs over easy, some bacon and a sausage. And after another long night of hanging out with friends, I collapse in a wrinkled heap in a sleeping bag on my hostâs bedroom floor, anticipating the torturous commute back to Boston the next day. the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament, a high school math competition back to text ? the woefully inadequate Student Center back to text ? Vincent Van Gogh And Paul Gauguin Analysis - 1261 Words
Jaehun Lee 11/8/17 Second Writing Assignment While the painters that followed the Impressionism period were collectively called the ââ¬Å"Post-Impressionists,â⬠the label is reductive. Each artist had a unique style, from Seuratââ¬â¢s pointillism to Signacââ¬â¢s mosaic-like divisionism to other influential artists. All of these unique visions were birthed from each painters reaction to the aesthetics of Impressionism. Two of the more influential painters from this movement were Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, both of whom aimed to connect with viewers on a deeper level by accessing Natureââ¬â¢s mystery and meaning beyond the superficial, observable level. Van Goghââ¬â¢s clearly visible brush strokes seem to pull his facial skin toward the back of his head, enhancing his bony and g aunt features. He also flattens his hair down on his head to highlight the headââ¬â¢s skull-like appearance by using shorter brushstrokes that align with the contours of the skull. By using brushwork and color in this manner, van Gogh is able to express his intense hunger and passion for painting, going so far as to sacrificing his personal health for it. While Self Portrait (dedicated to Gauguin) clearly shows van Goghââ¬â¢s spontaneous style, it also reveals van Goghââ¬â¢s experimentation with Gauguinââ¬â¢s use of symbolic apparatuses. Van Gogh sent Gauguin this self-portrait in hopes of convincing Gauguin to visit van Gogh in Arles; in borrowing from Gauguinââ¬â¢s approach of using symbolic apparatuses, van Gogh attempted to strengthen his appeal by bringing up common interests the two painters held. For example, van Gogh identifies himself as a humble Japanese monk. He paints his eyes as if he were Japanese, and puts himself in humble, rusty-colored clothing. This, in combination with the enhanced gauntness and skull-like appearance of his face, likens van Gogh to a Japanese monk. They waved to the researchers at the fuel dock, nodded to the haglets at the charter booths, shakaed the divemasters and the captains, and schlepped science stuff down the dock to start their day. Tako Man stood in the back of his boat eating a breakfast of rice and octopus as the Maui Whale crew ââ¬â Clay, Quinn, Kona, and Amy ââ¬â passed by. He was one of the black-coral divers who lived in the harbor, and this morning, as always, he wore his wet suit. ââ¬Å"Hey, Tako,â⬠Clay said. The diver glanced up from his bowl. His eyes looked as if someone had poured shots of blood into them. Kona noticed that the small octopus in the diverââ¬â¢s bowl was still moving, and he scampered down the dock feeling a case of the creeps fluttering to life in his spinal cord. ââ¬Å"Nightwalkers, gray ones, on your boat last night. I seen them,â⬠said Tako Man. ââ¬Å"Not the first time.â⬠ââ¬Å"Good to know,â⬠said Clay, patronizing the diver and moving down the dock. You had to keep peace with anyone who lived in the harbor, especially the black-coral divers, who lived far over the edge of what most people would consider normal life. They shot heroin, drank heavily, spent all day doing bounce dives to two hundred feet looking for the gemstone-valuable black coral, then spent their money on weeklong parties that had, more than once, ended with one of them dead on the dock. They lived on their boats and ate rice and whatever they could pull out of the sea. Tako Man had gotten his name because on any given afternoon, after the divers came in for the day, youââ¬â¢d see the grizzled Malaysian carrying a net bag full of tako (octopus) that he had speared on the reef for their supper. ââ¬Å"Hi,â⬠Amy said sheepishly to Tako Man as they passed. He glared at her through his bloody haze, and his head bobbed as he almost nodded out into his breakfast. Amy quickened her pace and ran a Pelican case she was carrying into the back of Quinnââ¬â¢s thigh. ââ¬Å"Jeez, Amy,â⬠Quinn said, having almost lost his footing. ââ¬Å"Do those guys dive in that condition?â⬠Amy whispered, still sticking to Quinn like a shadow. ââ¬Å"Worse than that. Would you back up a little?â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s scary. Youââ¬â¢re supposed to protect me, ya mook. How do they keep from getting into trouble?â⬠ââ¬Å"They lose one or two a year. Ironically, itââ¬â¢s usually an overdose that gets them.â⬠ââ¬Å"Tough job.â⬠ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re tough guys.â⬠Tako Man shouted, ââ¬Å"Fuck you, whale people! Youââ¬â¢ll see. Fucking nightwalker fuckers. Fucking fuck you, haole motherfuckers!â⬠He tossed the remains of his breakfast at them. It landed overboard, and tiny fish broke the water fighting for the scraps. ââ¬Å"Rum,â⬠said Kona. ââ¬Å"Too much hostility in dat buzz. Rum come from da cane, and cane come from slavinââ¬â¢ the people, and dat oppression all distilled in de bottle and come out a man mean as cat shit on a day.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠said Clay to Quinn. ââ¬Å"Didnââ¬â¢t you know that about rum?â⬠ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s your boat?â⬠asked Quinn. ââ¬Å"My boat?â⬠ââ¬Å"Your boat, Clay,â⬠said Amy. ââ¬Å"No,â⬠said Clay. He stopped and dropped two cases of camera equipment on the dock. The Always Confused, the spiny and powerful twenty-two-foot Grady White center-console fisherman, Clayââ¬â¢s pride and joy, was gone. A life jacket, a water bottle, and various other familiar flotsam bobbed gently in a rainbow slick of gasoline where the boat had once been. Everyone thought someone else should say something, but for a full minute no one did. They just stood there, staring at what should have been Clayââ¬â¢s boat but instead was a big, boatless gob of tropical air. ââ¬Å"Poop,â⬠Amy finally said, saying it for all of them. ââ¬Å"We should check with the harbormaster,â⬠said Nate. ââ¬Å"My boat,â⬠said Clay, who stood over the empty slip as if it were his recently run-over boyhood dog. He would have nuzzled it and stroked its little dead doggy ears if he could have, but instead he fished the oily life jacket out of the water and sat on the dock rocking it. ââ¬Å"He really liked that boat,â⬠Amy said. ââ¬Å"Can I get a duh for the sistah?â⬠exclaimed the dreaded blond kid. ââ¬Å"I paid the insurance,â⬠Nate said as he moved away, headed for the harbormaster. Tako Man had come down the dock from his own boat to stare at the empty water. Somber now. Amy backed up into Kona for protection, but Kona had backed up into the next person behind him, which turned out to be Captain Tarwater, resplendent in his navy whites and newly Kona-scuffed shoes. ââ¬Å"Irie, ice cream man.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re on my shoes.â⬠ââ¬Å"What happened?â⬠asked Cliff Hyland, coming down the dock behind the captain. ââ¬Å"Clayââ¬â¢s boatââ¬â¢s gone,â⬠said Amy. Cliff moved up and put his hand on Clayââ¬â¢s shoulder. ââ¬Å"Maybe someone just borrowed it.â⬠Clay nodded, acknowledging that Cliff was trying to comfort him, but comfort fell like sandwiches on the recently bombed. By the time Quinn returned from the harbormasterââ¬â¢s office with a Maui cop in tow, there were a half dozen biologists, three black-coral divers, and a couple from Minnesota who were taking pictures of the whole thing, thinking that this would be something they would want to remember if they ever found out what was happening. As the cop approached, the black-coral divers faded to the edges of the crowd and away. You read "Fluke, or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings Chapter 14" in category "Essay examples" Jon Thomas Fuller, the scientist/entrepreneur who was accompanied by three of his cute female naturalists, stepped up beside Quinn. ââ¬Å"This is just horrible, Nate. Just horrible. That boat represented a major capital investment for you guys, Iââ¬â¢m sure.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, but mainly we liked to think of it as something that floated and moved us around on the water.â⬠Nate actually had a great capacity for sarcasm, but he usually reserved it for those things and people he found truly irritating. Jon Thomas Fuller was truly irritating. ââ¬Å"Going to be tough to replace it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll manage. It was insured.â⬠ââ¬Å"You might want to get something bigger this time. I know thereââ¬â¢s a measure of safety working off of these sixty-five-footers we have, but also with the cabin you can set up computers, bow cameras, a lot of things that arenââ¬â¢t really possible on little speedboats. A good-size boat would add a lot of legitimacy to your operation.â⬠ââ¬Å"We sort of decided to go with the legitimacy we get from doing credible research, Jon Thomas.â⬠ââ¬Å"We didnââ¬â¢t make those figures up.â⬠Fuller caught himself raising his voice. The cop interviewing Clay looked over his shoulder, and Fuller lowered his tone. ââ¬Å"That was just professional jealousy on the part of our detractors.â⬠ââ¬Å"Your detractors were the facts. What did you expect when your paper concluded that humpbacks actually enjoyed being struck by Jet Skis?â⬠ââ¬Å"Some do.â⬠Fuller pushed back his pith helmet and ventured a smile of sincerity, which collapsed under its own weight. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s your angle, Jon Thomas?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nate, I can get you a boat like ours, with all the trimmings, and an operating budget, and youââ¬â¢d just have to do one little project for me. One season of work, maximum. And your operation can keep the boat, sell it, do whatever you want.â⬠Unless Fuller was about to ask him to shove him off the dock into the oily water, Quinn pretty much knew he was going to turn down the offer, but he had to ask. Those were really nice boats. ââ¬Å"Make your proposal.â⬠ââ¬Å"I need you to put your name on a study that says that human-dolphin interaction facilities are not harmful to the animals, and do a study that says that building one at La Perouse Bay wouldnââ¬â¢t have a negative impact on the environment. Then Iââ¬â¢d need you to stand up at the appropriate meetings and make the case.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not your guy, Jon Thomas. First, Iââ¬â¢m not a dolphin guy, and you know that.â⬠Nate avoided adding what he wanted to say, which was Second, you are a feckless weasel out to make a buck without any consideration for science or the animals you study. Instead he said, ââ¬Å"There are dozens of people doing studies on captive dolphins. Why donââ¬â¢t you go to them?â⬠ââ¬Å"I have the animal study. You donââ¬â¢t have to do the study. I just want your name on it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wonââ¬â¢t the people who actually did the study have some objection to that?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. Theyââ¬â¢ll be fine with it. I need your name and your presence, Nate.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think so. I canââ¬â¢t see myself testifying before impact committees and county planning boards.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay, fair enough. Clay or Amy can do the stand-ups. Just put your name on the paper and do the environmental impact study. I need the credibility of your name.â⬠ââ¬Å"Which I wonââ¬â¢t have as soon as I let you use me. Iââ¬â¢m sorry, but my name is all I really have to show for twenty-five years of work. I canââ¬â¢t sell it out, even for a really nice boat.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, right, the nobility of starvation. Fuck that, Nate, and fuck your high ideals. Iââ¬â¢m doing more for these animals by exposing the public to them than youââ¬â¢ll do in a lifetime of graphing out songs and recording behavior. And before you retire to your ivory tower on the ethical high ground, youââ¬â¢d better take a good look at your people. That kid is a common thief, and no one has ever heard of your precious new assistant.â⬠Fuller turned and signaled to his chorus line of whalettes that they were going to their boat. Quinn looked for Amy, saw her on the other side of the cop who was talking to Clay, helping him fill in details. He ran up behind Fuller, grabbed the smaller manââ¬â¢s arm, and spun him around. ââ¬Å"What are you talking about? Amy studied at Woods Hole, with Tyack and Loughten.â⬠ââ¬Å"That right? Well, maybe youââ¬â¢d better give them a call and ask them. Because theyââ¬â¢ve never heard of her. Despite what you think, I do my research, Nate. Do you? Now, get back to your one-boat operation, would you.â⬠ââ¬Å"If I find out you had anything to do with thisâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Fuller wrenched his arm out of Quinnââ¬â¢s grip and grinned. ââ¬Å"Right, youââ¬â¢ll what? Become more irrelevant? Screw you, Nate.â⬠ââ¬Å"What did you say?â⬠But Fuller ignored him and boarded his million-dollar research vessel, while Quinn skulked back down the dock to his friends. Oily flotsam seemed to be losing its allure, however, and the crowd had dispersed somewhat, leaving only Amy, Clay, the cop, and the couple from Minnesota. ââ¬Å"You. Youââ¬â¢re somebody arenââ¬â¢t you?â⬠asked the woman as Nate walked up. ââ¬Å"Honey, this guy is someone. I remember seeing him on the Discovery Channel. Get my picture with him.â⬠ââ¬Å"Who is he?â⬠said à «honeyà » as his wife took Nate by the arm and posed like heââ¬â¢d just handed her a check. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know, one of those ocean guys,â⬠she said through a grin, acting as if she were posing with one of the carved statues that decorated doorways around Lahaina. ââ¬Å"Just take the picture.â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you one of those Cousteau fellas?â⬠ââ¬Å"Oui,â⬠said Nate. ââ¬Å"Now I muss speak with my good frenââ¬â¢ Sylvia Earle,â⬠he continued in his French-by-way-of-British-Columbia-and-Northern-California fake accent as he went over to Amy. ââ¬Å"I need to talk to you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sylvia Earle! Sheââ¬â¢s a National Geographic person. Get their picture together, honey.â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s lying, Nathan,â⬠Amy said. ââ¬Å"You can check if you want. It was all on the resume I gave to Clay.â⬠She didnââ¬â¢t appear angry, just hurt, betrayed perhaps. Her eyes were huge and teary, and she was starting to look vaguely like one of those creepy Keane sad-eyed-kid pictures. Quinn felt like heââ¬â¢d just smacked a bag of kittens against a truck bumper. ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry. I justâ⬠¦ well, Jon Thomas is an asshole. I let him get to me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s okay,â⬠Amy sniffed. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s justâ⬠¦ justâ⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢ve worked so hard.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t need to check, Amy. You do good work. My fault for doubting you. Letââ¬â¢s get Clay squared away and get to work.â⬠He tentatively put his arm around her and walked her back to where Clay was finishing up his interview with the cop. Clay saw the tear tracks down Amyââ¬â¢s face and immediately took her in his arms and pressed her head to his shoulder. ââ¬Å"I know, honey. I know. It was a great boat, but it was just a boat. Weââ¬â¢ll get another one.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s Kona?â⬠Nate asked. ââ¬Å"He was around here a second ago,â⬠said Clay. Just then Nateââ¬â¢s cell phone rang. He worked it out of his shirt pocket and answered it. ââ¬Å"Nathan, itââ¬â¢s me,â⬠said the Old Broad. Nate covered the mouthpiece. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s the Old Broad,â⬠Nate said to Clay. ââ¬Å"Amy, you go round up Kona while I finish up with the officer, okay?â⬠Clay said. Amy nodded and was off down the dock. Clay turned back to the officer. The Old Broad went on, ââ¬Å"Nathan, I spoke to that big male again today, and he definitely wants you to take a hot pastrami on rye with you when you go out. He said itââ¬â¢s very important.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure it is, Elizabeth, but Iââ¬â¢m not sure weââ¬â¢re even going out today. Somethingââ¬â¢s happened to Clayââ¬â¢s boat. Itââ¬â¢s gone.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, my, he must be distraught. Iââ¬â¢ll come down and look after him, but you have to get out in the channel today. I just feel itââ¬â¢s very important.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think youââ¬â¢ll need to come down, Elizabeth. Clay will manage.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, if you say so, but you have to promise me youââ¬â¢ll go out today.â⬠ââ¬Å"I promise.â⬠ââ¬Å"And youââ¬â¢ll take a pastrami on rye for that big male.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll try, Elizabeth. I have to go now, Clay needs me for something.â⬠ââ¬Å"With Swiss cheese and hot mustard!â⬠the Old Broad said as Nate disconnected. Clay thanked the policeman, who nodded to Quinn as he walked off. Even the couple from Minnesota had moved on, and only Clay and Quinn were left on the dock. ââ¬Å"Where are the kids?â⬠asked Nate, cringing at the whole idea: he and Clay, the middle-aged couple being responsible and boring while the kids went off to play and have adventures. ââ¬Å"I asked Amy to find Kona. They could be anywhere.â⬠ââ¬Å"Clay, I need to ask you something before they get back.â⬠ââ¬Å"Shoot.â⬠ââ¬Å"Did you check any of Amyââ¬â¢s references before you hired her? I mean, did you call anyone? Woods Hole? Her undergrad school ââ¬â what was it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Cornell. Nope. She was smart, she was cute, she seemed to know what she was talking about, and she said sheââ¬â¢d work for free. The bona fides looked good on paper. Gift horse, Nate.â⬠ââ¬Å"Jon Thomas Fuller said that he checked and that no one at Woods Hole has heard of her.â⬠ââ¬Å"Fullerââ¬â¢s an asshole. Look, I donââ¬â¢t really care if she finished high school. The kid has proven herself. Sheââ¬â¢s got balls.â⬠ââ¬Å"Still, maybe I should call Tyack. Just in case.â⬠ââ¬Å"If you need to. Call him this afternoon when you get back in.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure Fuller was just yanking my chain. He tried to offer us a boat like his if we backed his dolphin-park project.â⬠ââ¬Å"And you turned him down?â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course.â⬠ââ¬Å"But those are really nice boats. Our armada has been reduced by fifty percent. Our nautical resources have declined by more than one-half. Our boatage is deficient by point five.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s up?â⬠Amy said. Sheââ¬â¢d come back down the dock and seemed to have shaken off her earlier melancholy. ââ¬Å"Clayââ¬â¢s being scientific. Fuller offered us a sixty-foot research vessel like his, with operating budget, if we back his dolphin project.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do I have to sleep with him?â⬠ââ¬Å"We havenââ¬â¢t put that on the table,â⬠Clay said, ââ¬Å"but Iââ¬â¢ll bet we could get a sonar array if youââ¬â¢re enthusiastic.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hell, Nate, take it,â⬠Amy said. ââ¬Å"It would mean selling out my credibility,â⬠said Quinn, appalled at what total whores his colleagues had become. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢d be going over to the dark side.â⬠Amy shrugged. ââ¬Å"Those are really nice boats.â⬠The corner of her mouth twitched as if she was trying not to grin, and Nate realized that she was probably goofing on him. ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠said Clay. ââ¬Å"Nice.â⬠Clay was goofing, too. Heââ¬â¢d be all right. Nate shook his head, looking as if he were fighting disbelief, but actually he was trying to shake the memory of his dream of driving a big cabin cruiser through the streets of Seattle with Amy displayed as the bikinied figurehead. ââ¬Å"If youââ¬â¢re okay, Clay, we really should get out before the wind comes up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Go,â⬠Clay said. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll get the police report for the insurance company.â⬠To Amy he said, ââ¬Å"You find Kona?â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s down there with that Tako guy.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s he doing down there?â⬠ââ¬Å"It looked like he was building a saxophone. I didnââ¬â¢t go close.â⬠Quinn strode down the dock and looked to where Kona was talking with Tako Man. ââ¬Å"No, thatââ¬â¢s his bong. It breaks down for easy portage.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s a bong?â⬠ââ¬Å"Cute, Amy. Help me get the equipment in the boat.â⬠Suddenly Kona started shouting and running down the dock toward them. ââ¬Å"Bwanas! I found the boat!â⬠Clay perked up. ââ¬Å"Where?â⬠ââ¬Å"Right there. Tako Man says itââ¬â¢s right there. He dove down there this morning.â⬠Kona was pointing to a patch of murky jade green water in the center of the harbor. Jade green because of all the waste flushed from the live-aboards, as well as the bait, fish guts, seasickness, and bird poop that went into the water faster than the scavengers could clean it out, and so it caused a perpetual algae bloom. ââ¬Å"My boat,â⬠said Clay, looking forlornly at the empty water. Amy stepped up and put her arm around Clayââ¬â¢s shoulders to resume stage-two comfort. ââ¬Å"He dove in that water?â⬠ââ¬Å"The nightwalkers sank it, Bwana Clay. Tako Man saw them. Skinny blue-gray guys. He called them nightwalkers. I think aliens.â⬠ââ¬Å"Aliens are always gray, arenââ¬â¢t they?â⬠inquired Quinn. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s what I say to him,â⬠said Kona. ââ¬Å"But he say no, not with the lightbulb head. He say they tall and froggy.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re high,â⬠said Clay. ââ¬Å"Tako Man got dank mystical buds, brah. Was a spiritual duty.â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s not criticizing you, Kona,â⬠Quinn explained. ââ¬Å"We just assume that youââ¬â¢re high. Clayââ¬â¢s just doubting the credibility of your story.â⬠ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t believe I? Give a man a mask, Iââ¬â¢ll dive down and get a ting off da boat for proof.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hepatitis, thatââ¬â¢s what youââ¬â¢ll bring up,â⬠said Amy. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to work,â⬠said Nate. ââ¬Å"My boat,â⬠said Clay. Nate decided that perhaps he should offer a measure of solace. ââ¬Å"Look at the bright side, Clay. At least whales are big.â⬠ââ¬Å"How is that the bright side?â⬠ââ¬Å"We could be studying viruses. You have any idea what it costs to replace a scanning electron microscope?â⬠ââ¬Å"My boat,â⬠said Clay. How to cite Fluke, or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings Chapter 14, Essay examples

Symbolism In ââ¬ËThe Glass Menagerieââ¬â¢ Essay Research Paper Example For Students
Symbolism In ââ¬ËThe Glass Menagerieââ¬â¢ Essay Research Paper I have a poets weakness for symbols. So states Tom Wingfield, narrator and major character in Tennessee Williams timeless play The Glass Menagerie. Through the eyes of Tom, the viewer gets a glance into the life of his family in the pre-war depression era; his mother, a southern belle desperately clinging to the past, his sister, a young woman too fragile to function in society, and himself, a struggling young poet working at a warehouse to pay the bills. Williams, through his remarkable use of symbols, is able to effectively express the theme of The Glass Menagerie : That of hopeful aspirations followed by inevitable disappointment, having dreams which are destroyed by the harsh realities of the world. We will write a custom essay on Symbolism In ââ¬ËThe Glass Menagerieââ¬â¢ Research Paper specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Symbols are a major part of this play, as Tom, the narrator, is a poet, and admits he has a weakness for symbols. One major symbol presented in the story is that of the fire escape, a symbol that has a different meaning and function for each character. For Tom, it is a means of escape from fire, not the type of fire that was considered in its building, but the slow and implacable fires of human desperation. This is especially true of Toms apartment. His mother, devastated after her daughter Lauras failure to cope in business college, becomes obsessed with finding her a gentleman caller so that she can marry and be well supported. When this caller finally comes, and it seems like it was meant to be, as they dance and kiss, he announces he is engaged, and dashes their hopes. The ever-fragile Laura, temporarily drawn out of her dream-world shell of her glass collection and the victrola, draws further back into herself. Now a terrible desperation fills the apartment, and Tom decides he m ust escape the suffocating environment to follow his own calling. The fire escape to him represents a path to the outside world. For Laura, the fire escape is exactly the oppositea path to the safe world inside, a world in which she can hide. Especially symbolic is Lauras fall when descending the steps to do a chore for her mother, after leaving the security of the apartment. This fall symbolizes Lauras inability to function in society and the outside world. For Amanda, the fire escape is symbolic of her hopes and dreamshopes and dreams that a gentleman caller will arrive to marry her daughter and leave her well supported. This is the way Jim comes into the apartment, at the time when Amandas hopes have been peaked. It is symbolic that Laura does not want to open the door when Jim arrives. It shows her reluctance to let an emissary from the world of reality, symbolized by Jim, invade the comfortable non-existence of the apartment, and her insecurity in dealing with the outside world . Another recurring symbol in the story is that of the glass menagerie itself. This represents Lauras hypersensitive nature and fragility. The first time the menagerie is mentioned in any detail in a symbolic manner is when Tom and Amanda have a heated argument near the beginning of the play. Tom ends it by calling Amanda an ugly babbling old witch, and struggles to put his jacket on, intent on leaving. When he cannot put the coat on properly, he becomes frustrated with his clumsiness, and flings it across the room, breaking some of the glass collection. Laura cries out as if wounded. This shows how fragile Laura really is, and how she reacts when even the small balance of her apartment is shifted. Williams also makes the use of this symbol apparent on stage. When Amanda sits down to discuss Lauras future with Tom, the legend Laura appears on screen, and the music that begins playing is The Glass Menagerie. The most prominent use of this symbol comes at the turning point of the story, when Jim is left alone with Laura. The conversation turns to Lauras glass collection, when she remarks glass is something you have to take good care of., again showing her fragility. More parallels are drawn between Laura and the glass collection with the introduction of the unicorn. Jim says Poor little fellow, he must feel

6 WARNING Signs Youre Getting Fired
6 WARNING Signs Youre Getting Fired Afraid you might lose your job? Are you starting to hide from your boss when you see her coming? Rather than live in fear, why not confront the situation and consider the following 6 warning signs youââ¬â¢re getting fired? That way you could maybe even do something about it and avoid the inevitable. You could try to turn things around at your current company or start looking for a new job while you still have the safety net of a paycheck. Here are the top 6 warning signs youââ¬â¢re getting fired:1. Role shiftYour job has changed, and not for the better. If your role suddenly shifts or youââ¬â¢re moved to a different department without explanation, and that move is lateral- i.e. you havenââ¬â¢t been promoted, then youââ¬â¢re probably in the danger zone.2. More responsibilities, same payIf youââ¬â¢ve been given lots more to do, or some more difficult projects, but you havenââ¬â¢t been given a pay bump to go with it, then that probably means youââ¬â¢re absorbing the work of someone who was laid off- or someone they were planning on hiring but didnââ¬â¢t, for whatever reason. Itââ¬â¢s never a good sign to be asked to do more without being compensated. Keep your eyes open from here on out.3. The top dogs are jumping shipIf your companyââ¬â¢s top performers are bailing and taking jobs elsewhere, then you might do well to follow them. Trust that they best guys know where to go in order to be valued. And ask yourself why youââ¬â¢re not doing the same.4. Your industry is overOkay, maybe not over, but sort of sinking. Your company may be okay, but your industry is experiencing a bit of a lull or lag. Donââ¬â¢t get complacent. Start thinking how your skills and position might translate into other fields and donââ¬â¢t get caught with your pants down.5. Your company has a new strategyThis implies that the old one wasnââ¬â¢t working so well. Try to avoid becoming associated with that old strategy, or risk getting thrown out along with it.6. Your company relocatesAny time a company moves, they jettison a lot of their extra weight and expensive employees. You could be one casualty of their cost-cutting.

Armistice Day Quotes
Armistice Day Quotes Armistice Day or Remembrance Day is a day to honor the service of military personnel during the First World War. On November 11, 1918, the Allied Forces and Germany signed the armistice agreement for the cessation of war. After the Second World War, November 11 is celebrated as Armistice or Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth of Nations and as Veterans Day in the US. In the US, Armistice Day was renamed to Veterans Day in 1954, at the end of the Korean War. It was instituted to honor all war veterans, living and martyred. On this day, military personnel and their families enjoy special treats, discounts, and perks from military and non-military establishments. Today, Armistice Day is a national holiday in Commonwealth Nations, and countries outside the Commonwealth such as France, Germany, and Belgium. Government s recognize the contribution of war veterans, who displayed courage and patriotism in the face of danger. Soldiers are honored with medals, certificates, and prizes. Grand parades, marching bands, and other military ceremonies mark the holiday, building the spirit of patriotism and brotherhood. General Omar N. If they lived on this side, we would be called murderers. Chris Taylor, Platoon I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy; we fought ourselves. The enemy was in us. Veterans Day is not. So I will throw Veterans Day over my shoulder. Armistice Day I will keep. I dont want to throw away any sacred things. General William Tecumseh Sherman I confess without shame that I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. APPIAN WAY Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
APPIAN WAY - Research Paper Example The remaining sections were constructed in the course of next few centuries, with the road spanning about 563kms and thereby connecting Rome to Brindisi in southeast Italy. When the road construction process was started, it was mainly leveling the dirt road. After leveling, large stones as well as mortar were laid, which is followed by the laying of gravel. When the basic structure of the road was formed, it was topped with small stones which fitted into the gaps, thereby forming a flat surface. The small stones fitted into the gaps so aptly that historians marveled at how the small stones seem to have ââ¬Å"grownâ⬠along with the other components. For instance, historian Procopius said that small stores ââ¬Å"did not look so much fitted together but as grown togetherâ⬠, so much so they led to the formation of a road surface which was smooth, and far better than the jagged irregular roads before. (Kaster, 2012, p. 23). On the whole, the initial construction process of using large stones as the base, and then fitting in with softer gravel as well as small stones gave a proper and also functional look to the road. ââ¬Å"Large stones made up the bulk of its construction and softer gravel that was compacted between the rocks cemented it.â⬠(Appian Way, Rome,â⬠n. d). Then, when the construction began on the stretch between Rome and Lake Albano, the Romans started using lime cement to build better quality roads. Sourced from volcanic rocks, this lime cement was laid over the small stones thereby providing a far smoother road surface. In addition, the Romans crowned the middle portion of the road for the purpose of water runoff, and also built ditches on either side of the road which were protected by retaining walls. It was while extending the road through the Pontine Marshes; the Romans faced number of challenges. Their plan to dry the marshes, build bridges over it and so on did not gave expected results, forcing the Romans to build

The Profound Effect Of Jimi Hendrix Music Essay
The Profound Effect Of Jimi Hendrix Music Essay Jimi Hendrix was a profound artist. He left an amazing and great impression on everyone that he met with or even played before. This impression spread even further when he released an album. He took the guitar to a whole new level and with that he affected music and the people who listened to it for years to come; even now his music and stage presence influences and shapes todays music. There are so many different aspects that were affected by his music. He was able to change the way a guitar would be looked at and even how it would be played. He changed the way people performed on stage and how they dressed. If you do a Google search for Jimi Hendrix you get about 17.9 million results if this does not show how many people have been inspired by Hendrix I dont know what could. Jimi Hendrix was an amazing and vibrant soul. To understand where the body and soul of Hendrixs music comes from we must start with where he came from and how he was raised. Hendrix was born Johnny Allen Hendrix in Seattle, Washington on November 27, 1942. When he was born his mother was only 17. His parents Lucille and Al had a struggling relationship and it eventually lead to their divorce on December 17, 1951. Many say that it was Lucilles drinking that caused the relationship to dissipate. This seems to be true due to her cause of death. Lucille died on February 2nd, 1958 due to cirrhosis of the liver which caused her spleen to rupture. With the problems that Al faced with Hendrixs mother he decided to change his name to James Marshall Hendrix. This was said to have been for Als late brother Leon Marshall Hendrix. Hendrix was the one of five children. The rest of his siblings spent most of their time in foster care. His father had difficulty finding a job after world war two so sometimes Hendrix spent time with his grandmoth er in Vancouver, British Columbia. While Hendrix was growing up his father ran across a ukulele while cleaning out a garage and gave it to Hendrix. He took a liking to it right away so his father bought a second hand acoustic guitar from an acquaintance he knew. Hendrix learned to play by practicing for many, many hours a day. He talked to those who knew how to play and took their tips and advice and began learning how to play. He started watching how other people played the guitar and he decided to take his learning a step further by listening to records and trying to play them. When he first began to learn how to play he was faced with one main problem. The guitars were designed for right-handed people. This lead to one of Hendrixs most noticeable playing styles. He played a right-handed guitar upside-down so as to allow him to play left-handed. After Hendrix took a huge liking to the guitar his father decided he needed an upgrade. So sometime around 1958-1959 his father purchased him a white Supro Ozark electric gu itar. He purchased this for Jimi even though he could not get an amplifier with it. This did not stop Hendrix who went on to learn everything he could about playing the guitar. Hendrix had many, now famous, inspirations to follow while growing up. He listened to the likes of Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and many other rock and soul bands. He played in a few small bands while going to school and eventually dropped out of high school. The first formal band that he was a member of was The Velvetones, a small band who played for no pay. Following this band Hendrix joined the Rocking Kings who played professionally. At one point Hendrix left his guitar backstage after a venue and it was stolen. His father decided to purchase Hendrix another guitar which happened to be a Silvertone Danelectro which Hendrix went on to personalize. Hendrix continued playing and eventually got caught up in car theft and this led to his choice of joining the Army. Hendrix enlisted into the U.S. armed forces on May 31st, 1961. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and was stationed in Fort Campbell. There were many stories about why he was discharged from the military, but the most commonly accepted reason was that Hendrix had broken an ankle in a jump and was then honorably discharged soon after. While in service Hendrix met up with a bass player by the name Billy Cox and formed a friendship with him. They went on to play together from that day till just before Hendrixs death. After his discharge from the service Hendrix decided to work on playing music. He became a backup musician for the likes of: B. B. King, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and, Ike and Tina Turner. He started this portion of his career in Clarksville, Tennessee. His work with the previously mentioned artist lead him to New York where joined up with the Isley Brothers. He eventually left them and ran across Little Richard and has been found to have said I wanted to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice (Band of Thebes). After a short stint with Little Richard, Hendrix went back to playing for the Isley Brothers. Later that same year Hendrix joined Curtis Knight and the Squires and performed with them for around eight months. He then signed a three-year recording contract with Ed Chalpin that stated that he would receive a 1% royalty. This would cause Hendrix a few problems later down the road. In 1966 Hendrix decided to start his own band called, The Blue Flame. This band wa s made up of Randy Palmer on bass, Danny Casey on drums, and Randy Wolfe on guitar (mainly slides and rhythm). The band did well for a while but Hendrix was looking for more. One day Hendrix ran across Linda Keith who introduced him to the Rolling Stones manager and producer who both decided to pass on taking in Hendrix. She then introduced him to Chas Chandler who was looking for some new talent to manage and produce. He liked Hendrixs song Hey Joe and decided to try and make it a hit, this lead to Hendrixs move to London. Chandler changed Hendrixs stage name from Jimmy to Jimi and then helped setup The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The new band was made up of Noel Redding on bass, Mitch Mitchell on drums and of course Jimi Hendrix on guitar and vocals. Hendrix met many more famous or soon to be famous people along his path to stardom these included people like Pete Townshend and Eric Clapton and the band Cream. Hendrix did great in this position and stayed here for almost the rest of his career. He released many hit songs and also many great albums. Redding was not taking a liking to the bass and eventually left and started his own band which Hendrix allowed to open up for some of his performances. With this change Hendrix had the band changed to Gypsy Sun and Rainbows with Billy Cox on bass. Hendrix went on to play at many different venues most notably was Woodstock. Hendrix went on recording music until his death in September 18th, 1970. With some knowledge of how Hendrix grew up and became famous we can see that he overcame many different things in his life that allowed him to prosper. Hendrix did many things for music while he composed and played it. He has forever changed the guitar and the way it is played, especially the electric guitar. His first realization when he grew up to play a right-handed guitar left-handed had a profound effect on the sound of the electric guitar. This due to the slant of the bridge pickup which allowed his low notes to be bright and crisp and his high notes to be mellow and droning. This was opposite of the intended effect. Hendrix also used the tremolo bar excessively which caused him to have to tune his instrument extremely often and sometimes it was enough to break strings which Hendrix played around, this not being an easy feat while playing live at a performance. These were not his only playing styles. Hendrix also used many different technical effects on his guitar. These are to include what most moderday artist call pedals. These allowed Hendrix to add the wah wah effect to his music and also the fuzz box. Hendrix was also known for the Octavia octave doubler which was used by him frequently. He worked with Roger Mayer who was a sound engineer. The majority of Hendrixs music involved high volumes and excessive power and also feedback manipulation. This is just one way Hendrix affected music. Hendrix may have been the founder of his guitar techniques but he was also famous for some of his stage antics. This was one huge characteristics of Hendrix. When he got on stage he was a showman. He loved doing things that allowed him to shine. He would get up on stage and play with his teeth. He would also play the guitar behind his back and between his legs. He also used his left fretting hand to do some of his tricks for him. He would play the guitar using just his left (this is probably one of the most used tricks today). He would also use his thumb to fret the low notes while using the rest of his fingers to play melodies over these notes. He loved being a showman and doing thing for the crowd for example the burning of his guitar on stage. These together made a great stage presence for Hendrix. These antics would go on to influence many different groups throughout the music history. Hendrix also affected fashion. This may not have been as profound as his music but the way Hendrix dressed throughout his life was quite different to the norm. Hendrix dressed in bright colors and in designs that most men would not wear. He would eventually create his own style without probably even realizing it. His style was mimicked for years during the 60s and 70s and began to grow less and less popular after his death. Jimi Hendrix was an amazing artist. He has changed the way the world looks at the guitar and music on a whole. He has inspired many different new artist and many different new genres of music. Jimi Hendrix was a profound artist who left a profound effect on the world of music.

Siddhartha Dualism vs Monoism
Western thought also states that e must live moral and just lives, free of sin. If I had to decide which philosophy is more forgiving and nurturing towards people, I would have to say that the Eastern realm of thought is less biased than the Western thought. Although I do not believe in a certain faith or god, Eastern thought appeals to me greater as opposed to the biased Western thought. The divine nature of the Eastern faith is more lenient and clear on underlying their concept and principles of a moral life. Western philosophy, as stated before is more biased towards its own beliefs.Western thought states that in order to reach salvation, you must follow the bible and live by Its guidelines and that you only get one chance at redemption and that everything else Is evil and a sure way to damnation. Eastern thought Is more lenient towards achieving the ultimate goal. Monism states that you don't have to be a monk or a spiritual man to achieve salvation but you can learn to achieve s alvation introspectively through your own way. Where as Dualism weighs people on sin, Monism weighs people based on Karma. Karma is the basic concept that every action will have an equal reaction in the future.Dualism states that we are all Judged by our Karma. Monism is clearer on the cycle of life and says that our Karma will determine what we will be reincarnated as. Western thought however states that we are weighed by our bad actions and that we only get one more chance at redemption or we do not reach salvation at all. To sum It up, monism has a very forgiving policy on redemption. In Western faith, It Is said that after one has parted from the physical world, he or he shall be Judged by the ultimate Judger to see If he or she Is worthy of salvation. In Eastern faith, once one has parted into the spirit world and has reached enlightenment, he or she shall live in everlasting bliss and get answers to all his or he questions. In all honesty, I think the afterlife is an illusion a nd that once we part from this world, it's over. The afterlife seems to be a little farfetched and too vague for it to be true. And even if there are spirits resembling about, we never seem to see them come alive. Eastern thought however seems a little more reasonable and self- explanatory rather than the west's notion of the afterlife. There are many deferent faiths in this world that millions believe in. Religion is a very powerful, very influential force in the world. There are many different view, different morals and different guidelines. One thing they all have in common Is the goal to reach salvation In an unknown afterlife. There are many evils that come from religion but good can also come from It as well. No belief Is true, there Is no one proper way how to live one's life. Society may set the laws and regulations that

Sample details Pages: 7 Words: 2232 Downloads: 4 Date added: 2019/04/05 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Police Brutality Essay Did you like this example? Police Brutality What is police brutality? According to the World Health Organization, police brutality is considered an act of violence. Police brutality is the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community that either result in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation (Cooper, 2015). Police brutality is the use of excessive force against an individual usually resulting in injury or death. Police brutality is an ongoing issue not only occurring in the United States, but also around the world, and it needs to be stopped. Due to police brutality, civilians are becoming more and more fearful and losing the trust of the police. Citizens should be able to go to the police for help and safety, rather than fearing for their lives every time they encounter an officer. Part of this fear stems from the media. The media is a good place to get your daily news, weather, and opinions, but they can be rather liberal and opinionated over certain views. Every time a negative incident occurs with the police, it gets national attention with the media. The media tends to focus more on the negative aspects of the officers compared to the positive aspects. Due to this people are only seeing or hearing negative stories of police officers. This is causing more and more fear for people in the United States. If the media were to focus more on the positive aspects of policing, then people would start to gain the trust and respect back for police officers. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Cases Of Police Brutality" essay for you Create order While its true that most police officers are good and are here to protect and serve, there are certainly many officers that are bad and use their place and power toward illegal reasons. These officers, unfortunately, give the rest of the police a bad image due to the abuse of their power. These officers tend to use excessive force on individuals due to racial or personal reasons. There have been many cases of police brutality like the Eric Garner case which occurred in New York. There have been many other cases of police brutality that have occurred throughout the United States. Unfortunately, it seems like these issues are only getting worse over time, and it is time to finally do something about it. Police need to be better trained and receive adequate training. Police departments also need to start forming a better strategy for recruiting officers to get people who will protect and serve the citizens of the United States rather than abuse their power as an officer. If departments were to start providing a more adequate training for their officers, then there would be less police brutality cases and more trust towards the police over time. The media plays a key role in the publics perspective on police around the United States. Typically, the media is first to pick up stories about police brutality and expose it to the public. The media plays a key role in the publics perception of the police. Historically, the media has been viewed as a reliable source of information where one can get local and international news, weather, and sports updates. With the availability of social media and the growth and spread of the world wide web, stories can now be delivered to the audience almost as quickly as the news is occurring. Unfortunately, in the race to be the first news source to deliver the information, the media may not be providing all the due diligence or objective research of details that a solid story requires with the result being the delivery of potentially rushed and/or incorrect/fake news. In addition, individual newscasters may often insert their own opinions, ending up providing biased information. This biased inf ormation can unintentionally instill fear or a general mistrust in the public. Recently in the last few years, the media has shown more and more stories of police brutality. Most of these stories end up being videos or stories of police brutality incidents occurring throughout the United States. These videos can include police officers choking someone, beating them up, tasing them, or shooting someone who is unarmed. These stories and videos can end up angering many people. The media tends to only show one side of the story rather than showing the footage of what happened from the officers point of view. The media tends to show more of the negative aspects of policing compared to the positive aspects of policing. By only showing the negative aspects of policing like cases of police brutality, the media is fueling an already angry public which is causing even more mistrust of the police. Due to the previous incidents of police brutality, there is already a general mistrust of the police in the community. Each time there is another story of police brutality in the news, the situation only gets worse. Citizens used to respect and trust the police, but now a part of the population does not trust them and now even fears them. Police are here to protect and serve us by keeping the criminals off the streets, but how can they protect us from criminals if some of them are the real criminals? Most police officers are good at their job and protect and serve their community, but the small number of officers that dont are giving the rest of the police a bad image. Rather than only showing negative stories of police officers, the media should also include positive stories like stories of police officers taking criminals off the streets or officers rescuing a kidnap victim. These stories need to be shown more to help bring back a better image of the police. According to a study do ne by Justin Nix and Scott Wolfe, police officers are becoming less and less willing to engage in community partnership due to the constant negative coverage of the police (Campbell, Nix, Wolfe, 2017). There have been many cases of police brutality occurring around the United States. Some of the most notable cases of police brutality involve Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Philando Castile. All three of these individuals were African Americans who were killed by a police officer due to police brutality. Eric Garner was an African American who was killed by the NYPD on July 17, 2014. During that day Garner was stopped by two officers named Justin Damico and Daniel Pantaleo, for selling individual cigarettes on the streets (Jackson, 2016). Garner was expressing frustration the entire time due to constantly being harassed by police. Afterward, the officer started choking him to get him to the ground. The officer used a chokehold that is currently illegal and banned by the NYPD. Garner screamed 11 times that he was unable to breathe, but the officers did not let go. Eric Garner ended up dying. Even though this chokehold that was used by the officer was banned by the NYPD, the officer e nded up not being indicted for the murder of Eric Garner (Jackson, 2016). This caused many reports of rioting and protests by members of Black Lives Matter around the United States. About a month after the murder of Eric Garner, Michael Brown became another victim of police brutality. At the time of his death, Michael Brown was unarmed and only 18 years old (Diversi, 2016). The officer stated he stopped two African Americans for walking down the middle of the road. According to the officer, the two men became aggravated and assaulted the officer. Brown then tried reaching for Officer Darren Wilsons gun. Due to this the officer reportedly fired off a shot. The two men ran away from the officer, but the officer pursued the suspects. After the pursuit, Brown began walking toward the officer aggressively. After many warnings, the officer fired off many bullets killing Michael Brown. There was another side to this story that stated something else completely different happened. Instead of Michael Brown walking aggressively towards the officer, it was the officer that was walking aggressively towards Brown. Either way, Michael Brown was unarmed and was unfortunately ki lled by Officer Darren Wilson (Pohl Potterf, 2018). In the end, Officer Darren Wilson wasnt charged, but more riots took place again just like the ones that occurred because of the death of Eric Garner. These riots were known as the Ferguson Riots. Another police brutality case took place recently in Minnesota in 2016. On July 7, 2016, Philando Castile was killed by police in front of his girlfriend and four-year-old daughter (Hardeman, Kozhimannil, Medina, 2016). The officers responsible for the death of Philando Castile were put on administrative leave rather than getting charged with murder. The death of Philando Castile sparked riots around the United States like previous police brutality incidents. All three of these people might not have been entirely innocent, but they still didnt deserve having their life taken away from them, especially in front of their family. Due to the negative stories from the media and the constant cases of police brutality, a group of African Americans started a group known as Black Lives Matter. The main case that started Black Lives Matter was the killing of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin was unarmed and was fatally shot and killed by a Hispanic neighborhood watch person named George Zimmerman in February 2012 (Kurtz, 2013). At the time of Trayvon Martins death, he was only 17 years old. After the shooting of Trayvon Martin, the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter became a popular phrase (Aird, Grills, Rowe, 2016). Shortly after, the group Black Lives Matter was created. Black lives matter started off as a good group that would bring together the community to protest police brutality and racism. Over time the group started to grow larger and began to protest more. The group transitioned into starting mass riots and started blocking highways for their protests. Our system is screwed up and, it needs to be fixed. There have been too many killings by police, which has caused groups to start rebelling against authority in the form of a riot. Riots can be dangerous, and it is time to make a change before anyone else loses their life. Officers need to be better trained by their departments to stop the police brutality and corruption. Corruption within law enforcement agencies has been and continues to be a major problem occurring within departments throughout the country. It has produced distrust between the police and the community and often between the police and their own management within a department. Attempts have been made to combat corruption in the police force, but success has been limited overall. For a civilized society to work best, the police and the community need to work together and be able to trust one another. Corruption occurs when a police officer abuses their authority or power to gain an advantage over another with less authority. Cases of corruption have ranged from a single officer being involved to multiple officers within an entire department. Its unfortunate and dangerous when corruption occurs because as stated earlier, it erodes the publics trust that they have in the police. The police are supposed to protect and serve, but due to the mistrust, the public is hesitating to report cri mes or come forward with clues to solving them. Besides corruption having a negative effect on the citizens, it also impacts the media, government, and the rest of the police force. It can be hard to tell the difference between a good cop and a bad cop, or a corrupt officer or corrupt department. A single corrupt officer or corrupt department can spread distrust and fear of all the police officers around the United States. Many people have lost faith and trust in our police force due to the number of corrupt officers, and many are now even afraid of the police. This needs to change. Police officers are supposed to protect the public from criminals instead of being the criminals. The public should feel safe and shouldnt have to worry about protecting themselves against corrupt officers. More work needs to be done to prevent and halt corruption and to do that, the causes of corruption need to be better understood. Corrupt officers tend to use excessive force and commit acts of police brutality. Corrupt officers/departments are also more likely to racially profile. Racial profiling is when race is used as the sole (or primary) factor influencing officers discretionary activities (Novak, 2004). Racial profiling is a very controversial issue currently occurring in the United States (Legewie, 2016). Police brutality is an ongoing issue that needs to be dealt with before anyone else loses their life by the hands of the police. Officers need better training, so they can better decide what they need to do during any situation they are dealing with. By doing so, there would be fewer accidents by the police due to a better training. A better training would lead to fewer deaths and injuries towards civilians and would also lead to more peaceful protests by the Black Lives Matter movement. Members of the Black Lives Matter movement would no longer have any reason to riot due to a better police force. The trust has been broken for so long, but it is not entirely impossible to fix. There is still time to regain the publics trust and respect in our police force. More trust would lead to less crime and a safer country to live in.
